Being active can have many positive effects on one’s physical, emotional and social well-being. Research suggests that exercising outside for at least 20 minutes a day can greatly improve anyone’s overall health, reducing stress, and staving off obesity and depression.

As an "active lifestyle" advocate, the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department wants to inspire everyone to start getting active or increase their level of activity. On Friday, Nov.  9, 2018, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the department will host the second annual "I Live Active" Wellness Showcase at Goulds Park, 11350 SW 216 St., Miami. Guests will have an opportunity to learn best practices by health and fitness experts especially designed to help adults of any age get started on a heathy living regime. There will be exercise demonstrations, resource booths to browse, giveaways, light refreshments (while supplies last) and much more! The event is free and open to everyone.

Guests will enjoy Zumba and meditation exercises, arts and crafts, and games of Bingo, Dominoes and Pokeno. A speaker presentation on Alzheimer’s disease is also included. 

Participating groups will include Alliance for Aging, Altered States Massage-Jacqui Kelly Massage, Alzheimer’s Association, Baptist Health South Florida, Chen Senior Medical Centers, Community Medical Center, Epilepsy Florida, Life Alliance, MD NOW Urgent Care, Shine, South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Social Security Administration, Well Care Health Plans, Inc., Walgreen’s, and the following Miami-Dade County departments: Community Action and Human Services, Community Education Unit Police Outreach, Fire Rescue, Parks, Transportation and Public Works - Golden Passport & STS, Public Library System, Water and Sewer, and the Office of Consumer Protection.

"I Live Active" is the motto of Miami-Dade Parks year-round Active Older Adults program which provides evidence-based programming for improved health and quality of life that engages the body, mind and spirit.

Hannah Kling, a Miami-Dade Parks Health and Wellness Specialist, and one of the event coordinators, explains: "Age, and especially retirement, should not stop people from being active and engaged in their community. We hope that current class attendees and future Park program participants can proudly say that they live an active life by attending classes at the parks and sharing the knowledge, friendship and wellness they have gained at the Parks with others. Parks are accessible, safe and community oriented places that naturally encourage people to live an active life, and we hope to encourage just that!”
