Florida Faces the Heat: Long-Term Health Effects of Heatstroke Raise Alarms in the Sunshine State

As Florida grapples with intensifying summer temperatures, health experts are sounding the alarm about the serious and long-lasting effects of heatstroke—a growing concern in one of the hottest and most humid states in the U.S.

The Sunshine State has already experienced record-breaking heat waves in 2025, with temperatures soaring well into the 100s. While most residents are aware of the immediate risks of heat exposure, fewer understand the lasting impact heatstroke can have on the human body—even long after symptoms subside.

“Heatstroke is a medical emergency that can lead to long-term organ damage, particularly in the heart, kidneys, muscles, and immune system,” said Dr. Thomas Clanton, professor of applied physiology and kinesiology at the University of Florida. Clanton, who has spent decades studying how heat affects the body, emphasizes the hidden danger of this condition: “It’s not just about surviving the initial episode. The damage can linger for years.”

Heat Illness: More Than Just Overheating
Heat illness spans a wide spectrum—from heat exhaustion to full-blown heatstroke. What separates heatstroke is the presence of neurological symptoms, including confusion, loss of coordination, delirium, and unconsciousness. Clinically, a person is diagnosed with heatstroke when their core body temperature exceeds 104°F and they exhibit central nervous system dysfunction.

In Florida’s tropical climate, this threshold can be crossed quickly, especially among outdoor workers, athletes, and the elderly. “Sometimes, people don’t even realize they’re entering the danger zone,” Clanton said. “You might just feel a bit off—woozy, disoriented, or more fatigued than usual. That can escalate rapidly.”

Long-Term Consequences That Linger
According to Clanton’s research and other emerging studies, the long-term effects of heatstroke are becoming more apparent. Victims may face an increased risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and kidney failure. Additionally, researchers have found changes in the immune system and metabolic functions that persist long after the event.

Clanton’s work with animal models has shown that heatstroke can cause epigenetic changes—a kind of cellular memory where DNA is chemically tagged to remember stress. While this can help cells respond to future challenges, it can also become maladaptive, making the body more vulnerable to disease later in life.

“Even when recovery appears complete, these internal changes can silently undermine your health,” Clanton warned. “What’s worrying is that these effects may not surface for months or even years.”

Staying Safe in the Florida Heat
Public health officials in Florida are urging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours, wearing light clothing, and recognizing early symptoms of heat stress.

Using the buddy system can also save lives. “Having someone with you who can recognize signs of heat distress can make the difference between life and death,” Clanton said.

With Florida’s climate expected to grow hotter due to global warming, experts say preparedness and education are more important than ever. “We need to treat extreme heat like the serious health threat it is,” Clanton concluded. “It’s not just about discomfort—it’s about survival, today and in the future.”
