FPL and United HomeCare Provide Emergency Food Kits to Seniors for Hurricane Preparedness

Florida’s hurricane season brings unique challenges, especially for seniors who may face difficulties accessing food and essential supplies during and after severe storms. Recognizing this, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and United HomeCare, in partnership with the Florida Council on Aging, have joined forces to support the region’s most vulnerable residents.

Supporting Senior Safety and Resilience
The core objective of this initiative is to ensure that seniors in Miami-Dade County are prepared and protected in the event of a hurricane or other weather emergency. More than 3,000 hurricane preparedness meal kits have been distributed, benefitting over 1,000 seniors across the community. Each kit contains a three-day supply of shelf-stable, nutritious food, water, and snacks—providing vital support for those who may be unable to leave their homes or receive regular meal deliveries after a storm.
Commitment to Community Well-Being
FPL’s dedication to powering strong communities goes beyond delivering reliable electricity. By partnering with United HomeCare and local organizations, FPL helps ensure that seniors have the resources they need to weather any storm safely. Since 2016, FPL has worked with community nonprofits to deliver thousands of hurricane kits, reinforcing its commitment to the safety and well-being of Florida’s senior population.
United HomeCare’s mission is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of South Florida’s older adults by offering community-based health care solutions that promote independence and wellness. This partnership demonstrates the positive impact that collaboration can have in addressing the unique needs of seniors during hurricane season.
Building a More Resilient Community
By providing emergency food kits, FPL and United HomeCare are helping to build a more resilient and prepared community. This initiative not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also offers peace of mind to seniors and their families, knowing that support is available when it’s needed most.
