FPL hardens Miami Beach Power Grid for Enhanced Reliability and Storm Resilience
Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is taking significant steps to strengthen and modernize Florida’s electric grid, with a focus on building a system that is both smarter and more resilient to storms. As part of this ongoing commitment, FPL is currently replacing traditional power poles with robust concrete structures in Miami Beach, a move designed to improve service reliability for customers and better withstand the challenges posed by hurricanes and severe weather.
This latest project involves the replacement of 72 power poles with reinforced wood or concrete structures in the area between Chase Avenue and Pine Tree Drive in Miami Beach. These upgraded poles are essential, as they support the main power lines that deliver reliable electricity to surrounding neighborhoods. The improvements will directly benefit approximately 660 customers, including important community institutions such as local banks, pharmacy services, and North Beach Elementary School.
FPL expects to complete this project by December of this year. The initiative is part of a broader effort, with approximately 82% of FPL’s main power lines across the state already hardened or placed underground. By replacing older poles with reinforced materials, FPL is ensuring that the electric grid is better equipped to withstand the impact of hurricanes and severe weather events, while also enabling faster power restoration in the aftermath of storms.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner expressed his support for the project, stating, “We’re hardening our infrastructure with these concrete poles behind me, we’re going to be storm ready preparing for hurricane season, wind resistant up to 145 miles per hour, this is a big win for our city and residents of Miami Beach.”
Beyond pole replacement, FPL continues to invest in the future of Florida’s electric grid by strengthening infrastructure, undergrounding power lines, and deploying advanced smart grid technology. While it is impossible to make any electric grid completely stormproof, these enhancements have already demonstrated their value, helping to maintain service and restore power more quickly during recent hurricanes and severe weather incidents.
FPL’s ongoing efforts reflect a deep commitment to providing customers with reliable, resilient, and forward-thinking energy solutions—ensuring that communities across Florida are better prepared for whatever challenges the future may bring.
