Driving Just Got Better in South Dade: Smoother Roads Save You Time and Money

Good news for South Miami-Dade drivers! Thanks to Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, over $3.2 million in roadway resurfacing projects are underway—or already completed—throughout District 8. These much-needed improvements are not just about smoother drives; they’re about saving drivers money and creating safer streets for everyone.

The Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), with funding secured by Commissioner Cohen Higgins, is transforming some of the most heavily used roads in the area. And with resurfaced streets, drivers will immediately notice the difference—less wear on tires, better gas mileage, and reduced risk of car damage caused by potholes and rough pavement.

A Better Drive, A Better Life
“These roads have been neglected for too long, especially in areas like Redland that are essential for moving the food that feeds our region,” said Commissioner Cohen Higgins. “I fought hard to make sure our community sees real, visible progress—not only for daily drivers, but for our farmers and businesses that depend on these routes.”

The completed and nearly finished projects include:
– SW 248 St from SW 198 Ave to SW 202 Ave
– SW 296 St from SW 209 Ave to SW 217 Ave
– SW 202 Ave from SW 296 St to SW 304 St
– SW 162 Ave from SW 200 St to SW 216 St
– SW 216 St, 232 St, and 217 Ave in various segments, now awaiting final thermoplastic striping.

Each resurfacing project also includes ADA ramp upgrades, valve and manhole adjustments, new signage, and pavement markings—all designed to increase safety and accessibility for every member of the community.

Investing in Community, Supporting Drivers
Beyond daily commuters, these improvements benefit local farms, small businesses, and families across the district. Smoother roads mean easier commutes, safer trips, and stronger connections between neighborhoods.
