“Greater Miami and the Beaches is home to an ever growing list of world class cultural venues, cementing its place as a cultural leader,” says GMCVB President & CEO William D. Talbert, III, CDME. “Museums in Miami expand beyond the confines of building interiors and can be seen throughout our community with art in public places stunningly displayed at attractions, parks, businesses, hotels, restaurants and on the walls of vibrant multicultural neighborhoods such as Wynwood, Little Havana, Little Haiti and Historic Overtown. Even globally recognized architects are lending their names to Miami projects creating a wave of interest for design and “starchitect” tours for visitors and locals alike.”
The City of Coral Gables is launching an exciting new outdoor art project, Venice in the Gables, in celebration of the completion of the Downtown Miracle Mile and Giralda Streetscape project. Eight-foot tall replicas of Venetian mooring posts, resembling the picturesque canal posts for the gondolas of Venice, will grace the streets of downtown Coral Gables for a temporary exhibit. Each Paline is uniquely designed by various artists, who incorporated their own vision and talent into the City’s emblematic aesthetic.
PRIVATE COLLECTIONS
Not only is Greater Miami and the Beaches home to impressive museums, galleries and a world-renowned art fair; the destination is also teeming with some of the finest private collections around. The Margulies Collection, by famed Miami art collector Martin Z. Margulies, is located at The Warehouse and boasts the finest in contemporary and vintage eccentricities. The Craig Robins Collection at Dacra in the Design District showcases the exuberant spirit of contemporary art and design with a collection of more than 200 revolving pieces from predominantly German, Mexican, Chinese and American artists. The CIFO/Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is a non-profit by Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and her family to support art and artists exploring new directions in contemporary art. Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz welcome enthusiasts to the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, Miami’s only free private collection. The Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation is one of the world’s largest, privatized contemporary art collections, while the foundation champions established and emerging artists alike.
ART AND CULTURE YEAR-ROUND
May is not the only time of the year for art and culture enthusiasts to flock to the destination; Art Basel Miami Beach, which is held in December, is North America’s most comprehensive international contemporary art fair, with more than 260 galleries from 30 countries showcasing works by more than 4,000 artists. The singular art fair event takes place at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but the spirit of Art Basel lives in venues big and small throughout the destination hosting satellite fairs, glittering parties and events in a week that is now known as Miami Arts Week.
