Take the Leap with SkyDive Miami

Is the thrilling and adrenaline-fueled act of skydiving somewhere on your bucket list? Or maybe it’s already an activity you indulge in weekly? Whichever it may be, a small but reputable skydiving facility known as Skydive Miami is here to help. Nestled in the Redlands, this hidden gem is sure to become your destination for a Friday night out.

The art/sport of skydiving has existed for centuries! During the 1100s, the Chinese were one of the first cultures who executed the idea of jumping off a cliff or static object, though it would take a lot longer for modern day skydiving to be invented. Among Leonardo da Vinci, who is credited with inventing skydiving in 1483, Andre-Jacques Garnerin’s first successful parachute jump in 1797 and modern military applications, skydiving developed into what it is today.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Skydive Miami in the greater Redlands area and spoke with Fred Whitsitt, the company’s vice president and manager. “There has actually been skydiving at the Homestead General Airport for 50 years, and we took it over in 1998. We’ve also been a part of the Redland Trail since its inception around ten years ago, with Schnebly’s Winery and Robert is Here being a couple of our more famous neighbors. Now, on the Homestead General Airport that we call home, we share this space with The Orient Express where you can learn how to fly an airplane and Miami Gliders where you can learn how to ride a glider.”

As exhilarating as skydiving may sound, many are still hesitant to take the leap (pun intended). “My advice to those who are apprehensive of trying it, is to research, talk to people who have done it before, watch videos of it online and then call a professional establishment like ours and ask any questions you have.

You can also contact us via our website, social media or email. We here at Skydive Miami are sincere, safety-conscious and fun oriented. We walk with you step by step, until you decide whether this is something for you.” Before calling it a day with Fred and his extremely welcoming facility, I was able to hear from a few of the numerous people prepping to take the dive from high up. Justine, an avid jumper, was eager to get back out there. “This experience has been great, and everyone here is very friendly. It’s scary at first, but you grow more comfortable the more you do it. I try to come out every weekend.” Francisco Alvarez and his wife Nadia, who thought she was going out for a day of shopping/eating out for her birthday, had this to say, “You have to try it at least once in your life.” Skydiving is a weekend (or weekday) outing that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
