Their annual storm drill ensures the team is ready to act when needed. FPL’s smart grid technology helps spot and fix issues early, reroute power, and speed up recovery after storms. The Storm Secure Underground Program is a key upgrade, putting power lines underground in storm-prone areas to make the grid more reliable. Past storms like Ian and Nicole have shown the benefits of these efforts, with underground lines performing better and reducing outages.
They also collaborate with local authorities and emergency services, ensuring quick power restoration to critical places like hospitals and grocery stores, helping the community to recover faster.
Your Role in a Safe Hurricane Season
While the power grid is FPL’s responsibility, residents also have a big part to play in hurricane preparedness, keeping the community safe and making it easier to recover after the storm. Managing trees around your home is important – hiring a licensed pro to trim them can stop branches from becoming dangerous projectiles during a storm.
“Whether you are a new resident here in the state of Florida, or if you’re a veteran to hurricane season, we just want our customers to start thinking about their emergency plans as the official start of hurricane season approaches,” says Eble.
Now’s the time to plan ahead: Do you have enough batteries and flashlights? Do you or your loved ones have medical devices that require electricity? If you have a generator, do you know how it works, and is it maintained and ready?
