In case you did not know, the most mobile joint in the human body is the shoulder. Its important function allows a person to move the arm in a circular or upward way, to scratch the back or to throw a ball.
Due to the wide range of daily activities and the repetitive movements that the shoulder makes, it is susceptible to minor or severe injuries.
The shoulders move thanks to the rotator cuff, which is composed of four tendons. Tendons are the tissues that connect muscles to bones. If the tendons or bones surrounding the rotator cuff are bruised or inflamed, they can cause pain, and lifting the arm above the head can be difficult.
Shoulder pain usually manifests itself in three different ways:
– Mechanical pain
Mechanical pain improves with rest and worsens with certain movements or positions; for example, it is difficult to lean on a bed with the painful shoulder.
– Inflammation Pain
Inflammation greatly limits all the movements of the shoulder, worsens with rest and especially at night, preventing a good night’s sleep because the pain is intense. It is typical of infections and arthritis, either by deposit of crystals in the joint (gout, pseudo gout), or rheumatic pain.
– Reflective pain
Reflective pain does not limit movements, nor is it altered by any movement. It is a symptom, of a lesion of an organ such as the heart, lung, etc. In that case, it is referred to as a neurological alteration, and is called irradiated. In the latter stages, it can be accompanied by tingling, muscle atrophy and loss of strength or sensitivity. Pain that is perceived at locations other than the site where the pain is occurring is not common.
Is it possible to prevent pain? According to Dr. Maximiliano Velasco, it is feasible if the person implements daily stretching exercises in the routine for at least 15 to 20 minutes, limiting repetitive movements.
Women could follow his advice that, according to studies, pains are number one in terms of frequency. Although there is no known cause for the condition, there seems to be a correlation between the types of work that women do. For example, the pain in the shoulder area may appear after ironing, washing, pruning the garden, performing intense physical exercises that require moving the arms, playing sports without warming up properly and lifting heavy weights, among others.
Dr. Velasco indicated that shoulder pain can be treated at home. So, it is recommended to rest and apply local treatments such as alternating hot and cold in the affected area, as well as avoiding lifting or pushing things. If the pain persists despite the attention given, you should seek medical help to avoid further injury.
Causes of Shoulder Pain
• Arthritis in the joint of the shoulder.
• Bursitis, which is the inflammation of a fluid-filled sac that normally protects the joint and helps to move it smoothly.
• Fractures of the bones in the shoulder.
• Dislocation of the shoulder.
• Shoulder separation.
• Frozen shoulder syndrome that occurs when the muscles, tendons and ligaments inside the shoulder become stiff and make movement difficult and painful.
• Overload or injury of nearby tendons, such as the biceps muscles of the arms.
• Tendon tears in the rotator cuff.
