INFO: The tribute to Dr. King’s Legacy started as a breakfast in Broward County, but has grown over the years to include a luncheon in Miami and a Day of Service. The weekend of activities consists of more than 800 business and community leaders attending a Breakfast in Fort Lauderdale presented by JM Family Enterprises, a Luncheon in Miami presented by the Miami Heat, and the YMCA MLK Day of Service presented by FPL, Broward College and Ocean Bank.
The YMCA brings the community together to promote unity and equality in people of all faiths and backgrounds while paying tribute to Dr. King.
The breakfast and luncheon will also include Spirit Awards and Youth Leadership Awards and scholarships in recognition of commitment to social activism, civic engagement and the diversity ideals of Dr. King. Honorees include Derek T. Davis, cultural publicist and advocate, in Broward County and Valencia Gunder, Liberty City activist and founder of Make the Homeless Smile, in Miami. Two youth will also be recognized.
The Weekend of Activities includes an MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. with opportunities for community residents to give back and Stand for Something at project sites throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties ranging from home repairs for seniors to school clean-ups to community garden work.
