Miami-Dade and Broward Drive Florida’s Leadership in Minority-Owned Businesses
Florida continues to stand out as a national leader in minority entrepreneurship, ranking second in the United States for the rate of minority-owned businesses relative to its non-white population. Behind these statewide numbers, regions such as Miami-Dade and Broward counties play a central role, where cultural diversity directly fuels economic activity, innovation, and job creation.
According to an analysis based on 2021 U.S. Census data, Florida averages 31.28 minority-owned businesses per 1,000 non-white residents, with a total of 137,804 minority-owned companies operating statewide. This places Florida just behind Wyoming and ahead of major economic states such as California and Texas, underscoring the strength of its diverse business ecosystem.
South Florida, particularly Miami-Dade and Broward, serves as a hub for minority-owned enterprises across a wide range of industries. The region’s large Hispanic, Black, Caribbean, and Asian populations have long driven small and mid-sized business growth in sectors including retail, construction, food service, healthcare, professional services, and technology. These businesses form the backbone of many local economies, supporting families and neighborhoods across both counties.
The composition of minority-owned businesses in Florida reflects this diversity. Asian-owned companies represent the largest share, with more than 34,000 firms statewide, while Black or African American-owned businesses exceed 18,500, the highest total for this demographic anywhere in the country. In Miami-Dade and Broward, these enterprises are visible in multicultural commercial corridors that contribute significantly to regional employment and economic resilience.
Beyond the numbers, minority-owned businesses deliver meaningful community impact. They create local jobs, reinvest in neighborhoods, and strengthen family-based economic networks.
