Free Tutoring Program for Miami Students Ahead of Testing Season by The Children’s Trust

New Year, Same Tests: Free Tutoring Program Returns just in time for Spring Testing
Spring testing is around the corner for children between grades 4 through 10, beginning in March 2025. While Florida students have improved in Reading, Math, and Science, teachers are concerned that students do not have adequate academic support outside the classroom to ensure long-term academic success. With rising inflationary costs, parents and caretakers often have to prioritize financially supporting their family over the long-term academic success of their children. Though these parents and guardians may not have the time or resources to bolster their children’s academic careers once they get home from work, they want them to succeed like all parents and guardians.
In partnership with The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade Public Library System’s free Homework Help & Tutoring Program is a relief for hundreds of working parents and caretakers countywide who need access or want to provide affordable and expert tutors for their children. The Public Library offers free homework help and tutoring online and in-person for Miami-Dade County students between K-12th grades in Reading, Math, and Science from certified teachers. The program is available online on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and in person on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 29 public library locations throughout the county.
During the 2023-2024 school year, the program conducted 21,507 in-person and 22,726 online sessions, ultimately conducting over 40,000 sessions countywide. This school year, The Children’s Trust contributed $225,000 to the Miami-Dade County Public Library System’s homework help and tutoring program continuing to make academic support accessible to all children.
Highlighting the importance of accessible academic resources, The Children’s Trust President and CEO James R. Haj states, “Affordable academic support is essential for high-need communities where parents and guardians are not always available to provide it themselves. The Children’s Trust and the Library are responding to this need by offering no-cost tutoring services to all students in the county, ensuring the academic success of all participants and their successful transition to adulthood.”
The Library’s free tutoring program resumed after the winter break on January 13th to help students prepare for the upcoming testing season and finish the school year successfully have a successful school year.
