988 Lifeline: The Voices Behind the Calls

Behind every call to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is someone who needs to be heard and a counselor prepared to listen. For residents of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, that connection can provide support during depression, anxiety or a moment that feels impossible to manage.

The work begins with something essential: listening without judgment. Gabriel Rubio, clinical supervisor at JCS Contact Center, explains that counselors establish a supportive environment, assess risk and help callers navigate their crisis while working to protect their physical and emotional safety.

Behind the phone, a trained team
The people answering 988 calls encounter a wide range of circumstances. Some callers express suicidal thoughts. Others need to talk about loneliness, emotional distress or concerns about someone they love.

Every conversation requires attention and sensitivity. Counselors are trained to assess each situation and determine what support the caller needs. Their work focuses on easing the crisis through the least invasive intervention possible.

Rubio explains that reaching out does not automatically trigger an emergency response. When a situation requires additional assistance, counselors can coordinate with mobile crisis teams or emergency services to help keep the person safe.

The numbers point to growing needs
JCS data highlight increasing mental health needs in the community. Mental health-related calls to 211 Miami rose 13%. At 988, overall call volume remained relatively stable, but the percentage of assessed calls involving recent suicidal thoughts increased 24%.

These are distinct measures, both underscoring the importance of accessible support. Rubio explains that many people contacting 211 are already experiencing emotional difficulties and need more than information about available resources.

Against that backdrop, the people answering the phones play a vital role: listening, offering guidance and helping someone identify a next step when they do not know what to do.

Support in the community’s languages
The JCS team offers assistance in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole, with interpretation services available when needed. That capacity helps counselors serve a diverse community and reduce barriers to seeking help. The service also supports relatives, friends and coworkers who are worried about someone close to them.

“You do not have to be thinking about taking your life to call 988,” Rubio says. If you are experiencing depression, feeling overwhelmed or need someone to talk to, call or text 988. You do not have to wait until things get worse to ask for help. A counselor can listen without judgment and offer guidance, free of charge, 24 hours a day.

You can also reach out if you are concerned about a family member or friend. No one in our community has to face these moments alone.
