FPL Shares Tips to Help Florida Customers Save Energy and Stay Warm During Cold Weather
While Florida is known for its warm climate, this week’s colder temperatures are a reminder that even short cold snaps can have a noticeable impact on household energy use. In response, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is sharing practical tips to help customers stay comfortable while keeping energy bills as low as possible.
According to FPL, heating a home can use two to three times more energy than cooling, making it especially important for residents to manage energy use wisely during colder days.
Smart thermostat settings
One of the most effective ways to control energy costs is by setting the thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable for the household without overusing the heating system. FPL recommends keeping it around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. For every degree set below that level, customers could save up to 5% on heating costs.
Customers are also encouraged to avoid raising the thermostat by more than two degrees at a time, as this may activate auxiliary heating systems. When used for extended periods, auxiliary heat can increase costs by as much as $15 per day.
Staying warm without overspending
There are several simple ways to stay warm while reducing reliance on heating systems. Space heaters can be effective when used safely and only in rooms that are being occupied. Bundling up with warm clothing and using electric blankets can also provide added comfort at a lower energy cost.
Another helpful tip is to reverse ceiling fans so they push warm air down into living spaces. Fans should always be turned off when leaving the room to avoid unnecessary energy use.
Sealing doors and windows with weatherstripping or caulking can help prevent warm air from escaping and cold air from entering. For homes with fireplaces, keeping the damper closed when not in use is essential, as an open damper allows heat to escape much like an open window.
Space heater safety
FPL reminds customers that space heaters should be used only for short periods and never as a primary heat source. Heaters should be kept away from furniture and curtains, turned off when leaving the room, and placed at least three feet away from children and pets. The use of extension cords is not recommended.
“Florida winters can be unpredictable, and even a few cold nights in a row can increase energy usage,” said J.T. Young, FPL Vice President and General Manager. “Planning ahead and making small adjustments at home can help customers keep their bills as low as possible all season long.”
