Homestead Secures $4 Million to Advance Krome Avenue Sewer Project

The City of Homestead is moving forward with a major infrastructure milestone after securing $4 million in state funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The investment is part of Governor Ron DeSantis’ newly launched initiatives focused on strengthening water quality and resilience across the Biscayne Bay region.

This significant funding positions Homestead among the communities actively expanding critical infrastructure to protect natural resources and enhance long-term environmental stability. The state allocation will support the Krome Avenue Sewer Project, a transformative initiative aimed at reducing reliance on septic systems, modernizing wastewater management, and improving the health of both groundwater and surface water throughout the area.

The project represents a strategic step toward building a more resilient Homestead. By expanding sewer infrastructure, the city seeks to reduce nutrient pollution, minimize contamination risks, and bolster regional efforts to restore Biscayne Bay—an environmentally sensitive ecosystem that has faced increasing threats from urban growth and climate-related pressures.

“We thank Governor DeSantis and FDEP for their commitment to Homestead and for investing in a project that is vital to our future,” said Mayor Seven D. Losner. “The Krome Avenue Sewer Project will help protect our natural resources, support responsible development, and strengthen the long-term resilience of our community.”

Residents are expected to see wide-ranging benefits as the project advances. The transition from septic systems to a modern sewer network will reduce the likelihood of system failures and nutrient leaks, which have historically contributed to water contamination. The improved infrastructure will also enable more orderly urban planning, enhance public health protections, and contribute to the overall restoration of Biscayne Bay.

Beyond immediate environmental gains, the project plays a key role in Homestead’s long-term climate strategy. As South Florida faces rising sea levels and increasing strain on its aquifer, upgrading wastewater infrastructure has become a central component of building community resilience and safeguarding regional water quality.

With this new funding, Homestead reinforces its commitment to environmental stewardship, infrastructure modernization, and climate resilience, positioning the city as a leader in sustainable planning across South Florida.
