MPC: The App Helping Travelers Clear U.S. Customs Faster
Long lines at U.S. Customs are a common frustration for travelers returning from international trips, especially for families traveling with children and multiple bags. Fortunately, a free and official government app is helping travelers move through Customs more efficiently while staying together: Mobile Passport Control (MPC).
Mobile Passport Control is an app developed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that allows eligible travelers to submit their arrival information directly from their mobile device.
One of its most valuable features is that one person can submit travel details for up to 12 people, making it ideal for families and groups who want to speak with a CBP officer together instead of approaching the inspection booth individually.
The benefits of using MPC are clear. Travelers often experience shorter wait times, avoid filling out paper declaration forms, and complete part of the inspection process digitally before reaching the officer. The app is free, easy to use, and available at most major U.S. airports and select international preclearance locations.
MPC is especially useful for travelers who do not qualify for Global Entry, those who are waiting for approval in a Trusted Traveler Program, or anyone looking for a faster Customs process without enrollment fees or background checks. Unlike Global Entry, MPC does not require an application, fingerprinting, or a paid membership.
Using Mobile Passport Control is simple. Before your return flight, download the MPC app on your Apple or Android device and scan your passport to create a secure profile. Your passport information is saved for future trips. Up to four hours before landing—or immediately after arrival—you can take a selfie and answer a few short questions related to your Customs declaration. This information is encrypted and sent directly to CBP.
Once you arrive at the airport, look for the designated MPC lane in the Customs area. Present your passport and complete the inspection with a CBP officer. Because your information has already been submitted electronically, officers are able to process travelers more quickly, resulting in a smoother and faster experience.
It is important to note that MPC does not replace your passport or required travel documents, such as ESTA for Visa Waiver Program travelers. However, it offers a secure, efficient, and cost-free way to streamline the Customs process.
For families, frequent travelers, and anyone looking to reduce stress after a long flight, Mobile Passport Control is a smart and practical solution for clearing U.S. Customs faster. To learn more or download the app, visit https://go.dhs.gov/oke.
