The Sports Causing the Most Injuries in Florida: Exercise and Cycling Lead the Statistics

A recent study conducted by the law firm Dennis Hernandez Injury Attorneys reveals alarming data about sports injuries flooding emergency rooms across the United States, with significant implications for Florida, one of the nation’s most active states.

During 2024, over 4.3 million emergency room visits were recorded related to sports and recreational activities, a figure that increased 17.4% from the previous year, highlighting a concerning trend over the past decade.

The Gym: The Most Dangerous Place
Contrary to what many might think, contact sports aren’t the riskiest. Exercise and gym equipment use lead the statistics with 564,845 annual injuries. In Florida, where fitness culture is part of the lifestyle and favorable weather allows year-round training, this reality takes on special significance.

“Many injuries occur during routine use, not in extreme situations,” explains Dennis Hernandez, founder of the firm. “Lifting too much weight too quickly or using equipment incorrectly are the main causes.”

Cycling: A Risk on Florida’s Streets
With 454,008 injuries reported nationally, cycling ranks second. In Florida, where thousands of residents and tourists use bicycles daily, especially in cities like Miami, Tampa, and Orlando, the risks multiply due to the combination of heavy traffic and unpredictable weather.Basketball rounds out the top three with 385,777 emergency visits, making it the most dangerous organized sport.

Patterns by Age and Gender
The study reveals that adults between 25 and 64 are the most affected, particularly in activities related to exercise and cycling. Children aged 5 to 14 primarily suffer injuries playing football and basketball.

Regarding gender, men represent nearly two-thirds of all injuries, with football showing 91.2% more male cases. However, women lead in horseback riding (156.6% more than men) and volleyball (104.2% more).

Prevention: The Key is in the Basics
For active Floridians, the recommendation is clear: use appropriate protective equipment, maintain proper form during exercise, and especially for older adults, prioritize balance over intensity.”

Simple precautions can significantly reduce risk,” concludes Hernandez, reminding us that prevention is always more effective than treatment.
