Florida Among Top States for Deadly Hit-and-Run Crashes
A new national study by Shane Smith Law reveals that Florida ranks among the top five states with the highest rates of fatal hit-and-run crashes.
Between 2018 and 2022, Florida reported 5.60 fatal hit-and-run crashes per 100,000 residents, which accounts for 7.73% of all fatal crashes in the state. This places Florida fifth nationwide, behind New Mexico, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arizona.
The data, sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reflects a growing concern across the country: drivers fleeing the scene of deadly accidents. These incidents not only break the law but can delay critical medical help and worsen outcomes for victims.
In comparison, states like New Hampshire and Maine reported significantly lower rates—just 0.29 fatal hit-and-run crashes per 100,000 residents.
A spokesperson for Shane Smith Law emphasized the importance of accountability:“Staying at the scene after an accident is not just a legal duty—it’s a moral one. These numbers show the urgent need for stronger public awareness and prevention efforts, especially in high-risk states like Florida.”
As the state continues to grow and road traffic increases, experts urge renewed focus on hit-and-run prevention through legislation, education, and community engagement.
