Education, sustainability, and community: the impact of Food Forests in Miami-Dade
As part of Earth Week and Arbor Day celebrations, Lake Stevens Elementary School in Miami-Dade County will host an initiative that goes far beyond a typical school activity—it represents a powerful educational experience that connects students with nature, science, and their community.
Organized by The Education Fund in partnership with the Life Time Foundation, the event brings together students, educators, and volunteers around the concept of “Food Forests,” an innovative approach that transforms schoolyards into living classrooms.
Throughout the day, students engage in hands-on activities that integrate math, science, and nutrition. They measure, calculate, harvest, and plant—turning everyday lessons into real-world experiences. This dynamic approach allows learning to move beyond the classroom and take root in a natural environment where every tree and plant becomes a teaching tool.
Beyond academics, the impact on the community is equally significant. In a county where average tree canopy coverage is just 20%, Food Forests increase it to over 50%, helping improve environmental conditions while supporting climate resilience.
At the same time, the fresh produce grown—such as papaya, bananas, moringa, and starfruit—promotes healthy eating habits and provides resources for families who rely on them.
The scale of the program is also noteworthy. It currently reaches more than 26,000 students across 71 schools within Miami-Dade County Public Schools, making it a first-of-its-kind initiative at a national level.
Events like this highlight the importance of experiential learning and community engagement. They are not just about planting trees—they are about planting knowledge, awareness, and opportunity for future generations.
