FPL Invites Schools to Apply for Grants of Up to $50,000 for STEM Education
Florida schools looking to upgrade their classrooms and expand hands-on learning opportunities have a chance to secure funding. Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is inviting applications for its Classroom Makeover Grants program, which will award $50,000 each to ten selected schools.
The application deadline is Friday, December 11, 2026. The initiative supports science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, commonly known as STEM, by helping schools create spaces where students can experiment, build skills and explore potential careers.
Which Schools Can Apply?
The program is open to public, private and charter schools serving kindergarten through 12th grade. Eligible schools must have a Title I designation or serve a student population in which at least 40% are economically disadvantaged.
Supported through a gift from NextEra Energy Foundation, the grants can fund technology, software, equipment, books and teacher training.
Schools can use these resources to connect classroom instruction with practical experiences. Previous projects demonstrate the range of possibilities, from robotics and coding to agricultural science, aviation and health care simulations.
For educators with a vision for improving STEM instruction, the funding offers an opportunity to develop learning environments that encourage students to ask questions, solve problems and discover their interests.
Local Schools Show What is Possible
Previous recipients in Miami-Dade and Broward counties illustrate how the program can bring classroom ideas to life.
Coconut Palm K-8 Academy in Homestead created a hydroponics laboratory. Hialeah Gardens High School transformed a classroom into a fully equipped hospital simulation environment.
In Pompano Beach, Cypress Run Education Center School upgraded its multimedia technology laboratory with television production equipment, along with coding and robotics materials.
Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale developed a new STEM laboratory featuring technology and tools. Hallandale Magnet High School in Hallandale Beach established an aviation laboratory with new laptops and project tables.
These projects offer examples for school communities considering how additional resources could strengthen their own teaching and learning.
How to Submit an Application
Interested schools can review program information and apply at www.FPL.com/Education. Winners will be announced in early 2027.
According to Kate Cotner, FPL’s director of community engagement, the grants aim to equip teachers with advanced technology and practical resources that inspire future professionals and innovators.
School leaders and teaching teams can begin by identifying classroom needs and considering how a proposed improvement would benefit students.
With the December deadline approaching, the invitation is an opportunity to turn those plans into a proposal and pursue funding that could help more students discover what they can achieve through STEM education.
