MIA Celebrates Miami’s 130 Years

Miami International Airport (MIA) is celebrating the city’s 130th anniversary with a photography exhibition tracing its transformation. From Miami’s incorporation in 1896 through the 1980s, the images explore the events and communities that shaped a city known worldwide as a gateway to the United States.

Titled Miami, The Magic City, the exhibition opened October 29 in partnership with the Museum of Miami. It will remain at the gallery near Gate D31 through February 2027, giving travelers an opportunity to discover local history as they make their way through the airport.

A city captured in photographs

The photographs come from the museum’s collection of more than two million historical images. The selection examines urban growth, recovery after natural disasters, the expansion of tourism, and Miami’s emergence as an international destination. Featured scenes include Muhammad Ali training at the 5th Street Gym, Pan American Airways seaplanes at Dinner Key, and the aftermath of the 1926 hurricane. Gloria and Emilio Estefan also appear, alongside the cast of Miami Vice, highlighting cultural figures and productions that helped bring Miami to audiences around the world. The exhibition also documents civil demonstrations and historic preservation efforts. Together, these photographs reveal a city shaped by public celebrations, community struggles, and the determination of residents navigating periods of change.

The legacy of new arrivals

Images of Cuban and Haitian refugees arriving in Miami form part of the exhibition’s account of immigration. Their experiences help explain how newcomers transformed the city’s cultural and social life while contributing to its diverse identity.Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava emphasized that the photographs reflect Miami’s resilience and the contributions of people from different parts of the world.Museum of Miami CEO Natalia Crujeiras described the exhibition as part of Museum Without Walls, an initiative designed to bring local history into the places where people live, work, and spend their leisure time.Presenting that history at an airport gives the project a fitting setting: a place where arrivals continue to shape the community’s story.
