FPL Projects Lower Bills Than Expected for 2027

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) residential customers could begin 2027 with an electricity bill below the amount the company projected last year. Under proposals submitted October 30 to the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), a household using 1,000 kilowatt-hours monthly would pay $141.87 starting in January, compared with the previously estimated $143.05.

The difference amounts to $1.18 less per month than the earlier forecast. It does not necessarily mean a decrease from current bills: the comparison involves two projections for January 2027. The proposed changes require regulatory review and approval.

What is driving the revised forecast

FPL attributes the adjustment to lower projected natural gas costs, operational efficiencies, and a generation fleet that uses fuel more efficiently. The company has requested a reduction in its fuel charge to reflect those expectations.According to FPL, these savings would help offset previously approved base rate adjustments and a proposed temporary surcharge to recover power restoration expenses following Hurricane Isaias.

The company also expects its bills to remain below the national average and the lowest among Florida’s major electric utilities.

A temporary hurricane surcharge

The proposal includes a monthly charge of $3.48 for the benchmark residential customer, running from January through December 2027. That amount is already included in the proposed $141.87 bill. The money would cover restoration costs and partially replenish the company’s storm reserve.

According to FPL, Isaias made landfall in Okaloosa County on October 9 as a Category 2 hurricane. Approximately 435,000 customers lost power, representing 84% of those served by the company in Northwest Florida.FPL mobilized about 17,000 workers and reported restoring electricity to essentially all affected customers within four days.

Investments and service reliability

FPL said its smart-grid technology helped prevent approximately 138,000 outages during the hurricane. Underground neighborhood power lines also performed about 14 times better than overhead lines, according to the company.

Scott Bores, FPL’s president and chief executive officer, said planning, investment, and efficient operations are intended to maintain reliable service while keeping customer bills as low as possible. For customers, the proposal connects two concerns: the cost of electricity and the ability of the system to withstand severe weather. FPL says improvements to generation and grid infrastructure are contributing to both goals.

The PSC must evaluate the pending requests before the proposed charges take effect. Each household’s final bill will depend on electricity consumption and approved charges. The 1,000-kilowatt-hour benchmark provides a consistent basis for comparing projections, but individual families may use more or less power and receive different monthly bills as a result.
