FPL Strengthens Education with Free Programs

The company is offering $50,000 classroom grants, literacy programs and STEM opportunities to support Florida teachers, students and families during the new school year.
As a new school year gets underway, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is strengthening its commitment to education through a variety of free programs designed to enhance learning experiences and introduce students to new academic and career opportunities.
Among the initiatives are Classroom Makeover Grants, which provide $50,000 to help eligible teachers within FPL’s service area transform their classrooms into modern learning environments. The funding can be used to introduce technology, educational resources and other tools that expand students’ exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Applications will open this fall.“
At FPL, we believe that investing in education is investing in our community’s future,” said Kate Cotner, FPL director of community engagement. The company says its programs are designed to provide teachers and students with resources that complement traditional classroom learning.
Another initiative, Drones in School, gives students an opportunity to develop technical skills using small-scale drone technology while exploring a growing field in Florida. FPL funds teams, supports teacher training and sponsors competitions where students can put their knowledge into practice.
FPL’s STEM Classroom Makeover program empowers teachers with cutting-edge technology and resources while giving students access to 21st-century learning environments. The South Olive Elementary School in West Palm Beach was selected as one of the winning schools for the 2025-26 school year.
For elementary students, Captain Wattage brings free, interactive presentations into schools, combining entertainment with lessons about energy conservation. Elementary schools within FPL’s service area can register for presentations offered during the fall and spring.
FPL’s educational support also extends to literacy through New Worlds Reading, a free program that provides eligible students with monthly books and activities tailored to their interests through fifth grade, helping families strengthen reading skills at home.
The company also supports robotics programs and Electrathon America, giving students opportunities to design, build and race electric vehicles while developing skills in engineering, technology, creativity and teamwork. In partnership with the Florida Panthers, FPL also recognizes outstanding South Florida educators through its Teacher of the Month initiative. From transforming classrooms to working with drones and building electric vehicles, these programs are designed to expand educational opportunities and introduce Florida students to skills and careers that could shape their futures.
