Florida Among Top States for Mega Millions Wins – Where Do Miami-Dade and Broward Fit In?
A new study has revealed which states are taking home the biggest Mega Millions jackpots, and Florida makes a strong appearance on the list. With billions in winnings since 2002, the Sunshine State continues to attract lottery players hoping to strike it rich — including many right here in Miami-Dade and Broward.
Florida’s Jackpot Numbers
According to research from sports betting tool Bettor In Green, Florida has claimed a total of $2.55 billion in Mega Millions jackpots since 2002. When adjusted for population, that equals just under $11 million in jackpot winnings per 100,000 residents, placing Florida 13th overall among all participating states.
Since joining Mega Millions, Florida has celebrated five jackpot winners. The largest came in 2023, when a ticket purchased in Neptune Beach won a record-breaking $1.6 billion prize. Other winning locations include Port Richey, Bonita Springs, Merritt Island, and Jacksonville.
What About South Florida?
While none of the state’s Mega Millions jackpots have yet landed directly in Miami-Dade or Broward counties, local residents are among the most active players in Florida. With nearly 5 million residents combined, these two counties represent one of the biggest lottery markets in the state. Convenience stores and gas stations throughout Miami, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, and Pembroke Pines often see long lines whenever the jackpot climbs past the billion-dollar mark.
For many families, playing Mega Millions is more about entertainment and the thrill of possibility than financial planning. Still, the excitement grows each time Florida appears among the top winners — and players in Miami-Dade and Broward know that any ticket could change their lives.
How Florida Compares Nationally
Florida ranks below states like Maine, New Jersey, Illinois, and New York, which have higher jackpot totals per resident. Maine, surprisingly, holds the number one spot with nearly $96 million per 100,000 residents, thanks to one massive jackpot and its small population base.
Even so, Florida’s consistent record of wins — combined with its large pool of players — makes it one of the most active states in the Mega Millions game.
A Chance for Everyone
As Justin Koch, Head of Data & Research at Bettor In Green, points out, “Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, and only 29 have had a jackpot winner. With that being said, you have a chance at winning big in any state that plays Mega Millions.”
For South Florida, that means Miami-Dade and Broward could be next in line. With billions already won across Florida, players here continue to dream that the next life-changing jackpot will be claimed in their own neighborhood.
