FPL recognizes the men and women who work through rain, extreme heat and major storms to help keep Florida powered.
On August 26, Florida observes Lineworker Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the men and women who work every day to help provide reliable electricity to communities across the state.
At Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), nearly 1,000 lineworkers are part of this essential workforce. Their responsibilities include installing and upgrading equipment, maintaining overhead and underground electrical systems, responding to outages and restoring service following hurricanes and other severe weather events.
The importance of their work becomes especially visible during emergencies. Before a major storm arrives, crews prepare for potential impacts and, once conditions are safe, deploy to affected areas to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
Florida has officially recognized this profession since 2012, when the Florida House of Representatives designated August 26 as the annual date to honor lineworkers and the demanding, often hazardous work they perform.
But their contribution extends far beyond storm response.
Throughout the year, FPL lineworkers help strengthen and modernize the electric grid, replace infrastructure, perform preventive maintenance and support community activities. They also participate in events such as Touch-a-Truck and visit local schools, giving students an opportunity to learn more about a profession that plays a critical role in everyday life.
Their work is also reflected in FPL’s reliability results. In 2025, the company matched its best reliability performance on record and achieved the lowest outage frequency in its history, according to its Annual Distribution Reliability Report filed with the Florida Public Service Commission. FPL also reported reliability performance more than 60% better than the national average.
