More Than $1.3 Billion in Savings: FPL’s Solar Investments Benefit Florida Communities

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has reached a new milestone in its energy strategy: its investments in solar energy have generated more than $1.3 billion in customer savings by avoiding fuel costs while continuing to expand energy infrastructure across the state.
FPL now operates 120 solar energy centers across 30 Florida counties, representing what the company describes as the largest utility-scale solar portfolio in the United States. Twelve new centers were added in 2026, including the recently completed FPL Sea Grape Solar Energy Center in St. Lucie County.
Together, FPL’s solar facilities provide approximately 8,826 megawatts of generation capacity, enough electricity to power more than 1.5 million homes.
“This milestone reflects years of smart investments on behalf of our customers,” said Tim Oliver, vice president of FPL Development. He noted that a diverse energy portfolio combining solar, natural gas, nuclear power and battery storage helps optimize the system, maintain reliable service and keep customer bills as low as possible.
The benefits also extend directly to communities where these facilities operate. In 2025, FPL’s solar sites contributed nearly $40 million in local property taxes, while supporting jobs and investment in communities throughout Florida.
Benjamin Balcer, director of Planning and Development Services for St. Lucie County, said these projects attract investment, support local economies and help strengthen Florida’s diverse energy infrastructure.
The expansion is also creating new ways to use land efficiently. FPL currently has active agrivoltaics initiatives at 53 solar sites, combining electricity generation with agricultural activities. At some locations, for example, cattle graze around solar panels, naturally helping manage vegetation and reducing mowing needs.
“This approach allows the land to serve two purposes at once, supporting both solar energy production and cattle grazing,” said Florida rancher Morgan Lott. FPL also says its solar energy centers are designed to support native wildlife and pollinator habitats, incorporating environmental stewardship into its solar strategy.
With more than six million customer accounts serving approximately 12 million people across Florida, the company considers a diversified generation portfolio essential to meeting the state’s growing electricity demand.
The latest milestone illustrates how FPL’s solar expansion is not only reshaping Florida’s energy infrastructure but also delivering customer savings, local investment and economic benefits to communities across the state.
