Inspired by His Father: The FPL Leader Helping Keep Florida Powered
Behind every light that turns on, every air conditioner running during Florida’s hottest days, and every home that remains connected during a storm, there is a dedicated team working around the clock to keep the power flowing.
For Nick Campbell, regional plant manager for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) in South Florida, that responsibility is more than a career—it is a family legacy.
His inspiration began more than two decades ago during the historic Northeast blackout of 2003. At just 19 years old, Campbell was driving through Detroit when the city suddenly went dark. Streetlights shut off, traffic came to a standstill, and millions of people were left wondering what had happened.
But Campbell knew exactly where his father would be.“I knew I probably wouldn’t see him for a few days,” he recalls. His father, an engineering technician at a local electric utility for more than 40 years, was immediately called in to help restore service. For three and a half days, he worked tirelessly alongside countless others to bring power back to millions of customers.
That experience left a lasting impression on Campbell and taught him an important lesson: reliable electricity is something communities depend on every minute of every day.

Although he originally envisioned a future in Michigan’s automotive industry, an internship in the energy sector changed his perspective. He discovered the critical role utilities play in everyday life and the immense responsibility that comes with keeping communities powered.
Campbell chose to build his career at FPL, attracted by the company’s commitment to safety, innovation, operational excellence, and opportunities for professional growth.
Today, he leads teams responsible for key power generation facilities across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, helping deliver reliable electricity to millions of residents and businesses throughout South Florida.
That responsibility becomes even more important during hurricane season. Each year, Campbell and his team participate in large-scale storm preparedness exercises that test the company’s readiness to respond to severe weather events.“We expect everyone to prepare as if it’s a real storm,” Campbell says.
Beyond technology and operational planning, Campbell credits much of his leadership style to the values he learned from his father—integrity, commitment, and service to others.“I always try to lead as a mentor and a coach. It’s important to help newer teammates grow and make the right decisions,” he explains.
In 2025, that culture of preparation and excellence helped FPL achieve the strongest reliability performance in company history, with the fewest outages ever recorded.
For Campbell, every uneventful day is a success story. It means families can focus on their lives without worrying about the power behind it all. It is proof that preparation, dedication, and countless professionals working behind the scenes continue to make a difference—just as his father did for decades, and as Campbell proudly does today for millions of Floridians.
