Innovative Program Helps Dozens of Broward Students Earn Their High School Diplomas

What once seemed like an impossible goal for many young people in Broward County has now become a life-changing reality. Thanks to an innovative partnership between Broward County Public Schools and Acceleration Academies, dozens of students who struggled to complete their education in traditional school settings are now celebrating a major achievement: earning their high school diplomas.

This week, 82 students from Broward County Acceleration Academies in Fort Lauderdale participated in the school’s first-ever graduation ceremony, marking a historic milestone for a program specifically designed to support students who need a more flexible and personalized path to success.

Family members, friends, educators, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of these graduates, many of whom faced academic, personal, or family challenges that made it difficult to thrive in conventional school environments. Through a student-centered educational model, however, they found the support and encouragement needed to reach a goal that once felt out of reach.

One of the graduates, Tori Lopez, recipient of the Sharp Award, shared how the program transformed her educational journey. “For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel behind anymore—I felt seen. From day one, this program didn’t just accommodate me; they believed in me,” she told the audience during her acceptance speech.

Acceleration Academies provides a free alternative pathway to a high school diploma through a hybrid learning model that combines online coursework, in-person academic coaching, flexible scheduling, and personalized support from teachers, mentors, and advisors. The approach allows students to progress at their own pace while receiving the guidance necessary to overcome both academic and personal obstacles.

During the ceremony, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn emphasized the importance of offering alternative educational opportunities for students who need greater flexibility and support. “These graduates are proof that when we invest in students and refuse to give up on them, we can change the trajectory of their lives forever,” he said.

Acceleration Academies CEO Kelli Campbell also praised the determination and resilience demonstrated by the graduates. “Many of these students have persevered through challenges that may have seemed impossible just a few years ago. Today, they hold high school diplomas and have every opportunity ahead of them,” she said.

The success of this inaugural graduating class highlights the powerful role alternative education programs can play in reducing dropout rates and helping students achieve their academic goals. By meeting students where they are and providing individualized support, Broward County Acceleration Academies is helping create brighter futures and opening doors to higher education, career opportunities, and long-term success.
