Study: Thousands of Miles of Florida Roads Remain in Poor Condition

While Florida ranks among the states with better roadway conditions nationwide, a new study reveals that thousands of miles of roads across the Sunshine State continue to show signs of significant deterioration, raising concerns about safety, traffic flow, and long-term infrastructure needs.
The analysis, conducted by Construction Coverage using data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, found that 6.4% of Florida’s major roadways are currently classified as being in poor condition. Although that figure is well below the national average of 13.1%, it still represents a substantial portion of the roads traveled daily by millions of Floridians and visitors.
Florida ranks as the 16th-best state in the nation for roadway quality, but transportation experts note that even a relatively small percentage of deteriorating roads can create significant challenges. Poor road conditions can contribute to vehicle damage, increase maintenance costs for drivers, reduce traffic efficiency, and potentially impact roadway safety.
The findings come despite a major increase in infrastructure spending following the passage of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021.
According to the report, highway and street construction spending has surged by approximately 25% in recent years, reaching nearly $150 billion annually. Yet nationwide, more than one in eight major roads remains in poor condition.
Florida faces unique infrastructure pressures due to its rapid population growth, booming tourism industry, and year-round traffic demand. The study found that Florida residents travel an average of 29.2 vehicle miles per day, exceeding the national average of 26.5 miles. With millions of vehicles using the state’s highways, arterials, and local roads daily, maintaining roadway quality remains a constant challenge.
The report also shows that 67.3% of Florida’s major roadways are in good condition, while 26.3% are rated as fair. However, transportation planners warn that roads categorized as fair can quickly deteriorate without timely maintenance and investment, potentially increasing the percentage of roads classified as poor in the future.
Roadway conditions have far-reaching impacts beyond daily commutes. Reliable transportation infrastructure plays a critical role in moving goods, supporting businesses, reducing congestion, and maintaining access to employment, healthcare, and educational opportunities.
As Florida continues to grow, infrastructure experts say sustained investment will be essential to prevent further deterioration and ensure roads remain safe and efficient.
While Florida performs better than many states, the study serves as a reminder that infrastructure maintenance is an ongoing responsibility. Keeping roads in good condition will remain a key priority as the state’s population and transportation demands continue to expand.
