Florida Fire Departments Receive $10,000 Safety Grants
August 22, 2026
Three volunteer fire departments in Florida will receive $10,000 grants to purchase critical safety equipment, part of a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening departments that often protect their communities with limited resources.
The grants are being awarded through the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, developed in collaboration with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). In 2026, the program is distributing $1.5 million among 150 volunteer fire departments across the United States.
Florida recipients include Cedar Key Fire Department, Country Oaks Volunteer Fire Department in Chipley and Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department in Altha. Each department will receive $10,000 that can be used for necessities ranging from personal protective equipment to emergency medical and rescue tools and communication devices.
The assistance addresses a challenge facing volunteer departments nationwide. According to the program, 82% of U.S. fire departments are composed entirely or primarily of volunteers. Many operate with limited budgets, making it difficult to replace aging equipment or purchase modern gear needed to respond safely to emergencies.
“Volunteer firefighters are there for their communities no matter what the emergency, from structure and wildland fires to vehicle crashes and medical emergencies to natural disasters and hazardous materials incidents,” said NVFC Chair Steve Hirsch.
Hirsch noted that insufficient funding can force departments to depend on outdated or inadequate equipment, making programs that help provide critical resources particularly important.State Farm and the NVFC launched the initiative in 2024. With this year’s $1.5 million investment, the program has distributed a total of $4 million to volunteer fire departments for equipment needs.
“At State Farm, we are committed to helping people manage everyday risks and building safer, stronger communities,” said Rasheed Merritt, State Farm HR&D Executive-Corporate Responsibility. “We are proud to support volunteer firefighters with equipment needed to enhance safety.”
The 2026 recipients were announced on August 18, a date recognized by many as Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day, highlighting the role these responders play in communities across the country.
Beyond the grants, State Farm provided complimentary NVFC memberships to the first 2,000 eligible applicants. The memberships give responders access to resources including training and support services.
For Florida’s three recipient departments, the grants represent more than additional funding. New protective gear, rescue equipment and communication technology can directly improve firefighters’ ability to respond to emergencies while reducing risks to the volunteers who routinely put themselves on the front lines to protect their neighbors.
