Folic Acid May Help Prevent Neuropathy in Diabetes Patients, Study Finds

A recent scientific breakthrough could reshape how one of the most common complications of diabetes is prevented. Researchers from Florida State University (FSU) have found that significantly increasing dietary folic acid may help prevent peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

The study, published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), provides new evidence that higher levels of this essential B vitamin—also known as vitamin B9—can protect nerve health and reduce the risk of damage associated with chronic conditions.

Peripheral neuropathy is a form of nerve damage that often causes numbness, tingling, burning sensations, and weakness, particularly in the hands and feet. It is commonly linked to diabetes but can also result from infections, injuries, toxins, or vitamin deficiencies.

According to lead researcher Dr. Patrick Stover, a professor at FSU’s College of Medicine, these findings challenge traditional nutritional guidelines. “Dietary recommendations are typically designed for healthy populations, but many individuals live with chronic diseases, meaning their nutritional needs may be different,” Stover explained.

Folic acid plays a critical role in DNA synthesis and cell regeneration, both of which are essential for maintaining healthy nerve function. In the study’s experimental models, a high-dose folic acid regimen successfully prevented the development of neuropathy in subjects at high risk.
