FPL Continues Strengthening Miami’s Electric Grid to Withstand Storms and Hurricanes
As South Florida continues to face increasingly intense hurricane seasons, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is actively reinforcing Miami’s electrical infrastructure to make it more resilient against storms and severe weather. Through strategic modernization projects, the company is working to reduce the impact of extreme weather events and ensure power can be restored more quickly when outages occur.
One of these ongoing efforts is taking place in the City of Miami, where FPL crews are replacing older wooden power poles with stronger concrete structures designed to better withstand hurricane-force winds. This work is part of a broader storm-hardening initiative aimed at strengthening the electric grid across the region.
During a recent demonstration of the project on Southwest 9th Street in Miami, Miami-Dade County Mayor Eileen Higgins joined FPL crews to observe the installation of one of the new reinforced poles. Using specialized cranes, crews carefully lift and position the concrete structures that replace older infrastructure, helping build a stronger and more resilient grid capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions.
While no energy grid can be completely stormproof, these improvements represent a critical step in preparing the city for natural disasters. Strengthening major power lines helps reduce storm-related damage and allows electricity to be restored faster, which is essential for neighborhoods, businesses, hospitals and government facilities that rely on continuous power.
In this specific project, approximately 2,200 FPL customers in areas surrounding the Riverfront, eastern Little Havana and western Brickell will directly benefit from the upgrades. Key facilities served by these lines include the Miami-Dade County Courthouse and the Claude Pepper Federal Building, making the reliability of these power lines particularly important.
As part of the project, 38 stronger power poles are being installed, with completion expected by September 2026. In addition to reinforced overhead structures, the system in this section of Miami will also include approximately three miles of underground power lines, creating a hybrid network designed to further improve resilience during severe weather.
These improvements are part of a much larger effort across the region. Currently, 83% of FPL’s main power lines in Miami-Dade County have already been strengthened or placed underground, marking a significant milestone in building a more reliable electric infrastructure.
Through these continued investments, FPL is helping prepare Miami for the future by building a stronger, more resilient power grid that keeps communities connected—even in the face of powerful storms and hurricanes.
