Dengue Alert in Florida: South Florida Must Prepare

The dengue outbreak in Tampa Bay, with hundreds of infections and one confirmed death, is raising serious concerns. Miami-Dade, Broward, and other South Florida counties must strengthen prevention efforts to avoid a similar public health crisis.

Dengue fever is once again emerging as a serious public health threat in Florida. The Tampa Bay region is experiencing one of the largest outbreaks recorded in decades in the continental United States, serving as a warning for authorities and residents across South Florida.

According to Florida Department of Health data cited by the University of South Florida (USF), 252 locally acquired dengue cases had been reported statewide as of September 26, 2026, including 223 in Hillsborough County, 13 in Pinellas County, and three in Pasco County. One dengue-related death was also confirmed in Hillsborough County.

In response, all three counties declared local emergencies to strengthen public health measures.

Miami-Dade and Broward Must Take Preventive Action

Although most reported cases are concentrated in Tampa Bay, South Florida’s warm temperatures, frequent rainfall, and established populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes create conditions that favor dengue transmission.

Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties should maintain surveillance, strengthen mosquito control programs, and expand public awareness campaigns in neighborhoods, schools, and communities.

Frequent international travel between South Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean also requires attention, particularly because dengue continues circulating in several countries throughout those regions.

Florida Surgeon General Urges Prevention

Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo joined local officials in Hillsborough County to emphasize the importance of preventing mosquito bites and reducing breeding sites.

Ladapo encouraged residents to use insect repellent, wear clothing that covers exposed skin, and eliminate standing water around homes.

Mosquitoes capable of transmitting dengue can reproduce in surprisingly small amounts of water, making routine household prevention essential.

Symptoms Residents Should Never Ignore

Dengue symptoms may include high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and skin rashes.

USF health experts warn that severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or unusual bleeding require immediate medical attention.

Prevention Cannot Wait

Removing containers that collect rainwater, cleaning gutters, inspecting yards, and using EPA-registered mosquito repellents are important protective measures.

The Tampa Bay outbreak demonstrates how quickly dengue can become a regional public health emergency.

For Miami-Dade, Broward, and the rest of South Florida, the message is clear: taking action before a major outbreak occurs is a shared responsibility among public officials, community organizations, and residents.
