Electric Rate Adjustments to Impact Homestead in 2026
The City of Homestead has announced upcoming electric rate adjustments set to take effect in early 2026, impacting residents served by both Florida Power & Light (FPL) and the City’s municipal utility, Homestead Public Services (HPS) Energy. While increases will apply to customers of both providers, city officials are encouraging residents to confirm which utility supplies their electricity to better understand how the changes may affect their household budgets.
For Florida Power & Light customers, the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) recently approved a new multi-year rate plan that will result in incremental rate increases over the next four years, beginning in January 2026. According to regulators, the plan addresses rising fuel and operational costs while supporting ongoing investments to modernize and strengthen Florida’s electric grid.
Similarly, HPS Energy customers will see a rate adjustment beginning in February 2026. The City of Homestead explained that these changes are necessary to cover increasing fuel and operating expenses, as well as to fund critical infrastructure upgrades designed to improve system reliability and resilience.
“These investments are essential to maintaining a resilient electric grid,” said Barbara Quinones, Director of HPS Energy. “In Florida, where severe weather events are becoming more frequent, infrastructure improvements help reduce outages, speed up restoration times, and ensure long-term service reliability.”
City officials noted that while rate increases may place added pressure on household finances, the upgrades aim to provide greater service stability, particularly during hurricane season and other extreme weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to review their current utility bills, identify their service provider, and stay informed through official communication channels.
The City of Homestead reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and stated it will continue to keep residents informed about utility-related matters that directly impact the community. Officials also encouraged residents to explore energy efficiency measures, such as using energy-saving appliances and practicing conservation habits, to help offset future cost increases.
