Miami-Dade Launches New Platform to Help the Community Prepare for Weather Emergencies
As South Florida faces hurricane threats, extreme heat, heavy rainfall and recurring flooding, Miami-Dade County has launched Weather Ready, a new digital platform designed to help residents and business owners prepare for, respond to and recover from the region’s most serious environmental hazards.
The online hub brings together information from several County departments in one centralized location. Its goal is to make emergency guidance, alerts, maps and practical safety resources easier to find before severe weather places families, employees and property at risk.Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
During this period, Weather Ready gives users access to severe weather alerts and detailed guidance for every stage of a storm. Residents can find information on preparing emergency supplies, protecting their homes, reviewing family plans and staying safe before, during and after a hurricane.
The platform also includes resources for extreme heat season, which extends from May 1 through October 31. Visitors can review safety recommendations related to dangerous temperatures, wildfire smoke, air-quality alerts and drought conditions. These resources are especially important for children, older adults, outdoor workers and people with limited access to air conditioning.
Flooding is another major focus. Miami-Dade’s rainy season runs from May 15 through October 15, bringing the possibility of rising water, street flooding and property damage. Weather Ready connects residents with interactive flood-zone maps, preparedness strategies and real-time information about changing water conditions.
According to the mayor’s message, the platform was created to simplify access to information based on each resident’s specific needs. County leaders are encouraging the public to explore the website early instead of waiting until an emergency warning has already been issued.Weather Ready can be accessed from home computers, mobile devices and through the ReadyMDC smartphone application. The platform also connects users to the County’s 311 Contact Center, where residents can report problems, and provides opportunities to register for real-time emergency text alerts.
Community preparedness programs are also featured, including the Community Emergency Response Team, known as CERT, and Communities Organized to Respond in Emergencies, or CORE. These initiatives help residents, neighborhoods and local organizations strengthen their ability to respond when professional emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed.
Residents and business owners who do not have internet access can review the information at any branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System.
With the launch of Weather Ready, Miami-Dade County is urging the community to stay informed, create emergency plans and take practical steps now to protect families, employees, homes and businesses from severe weather.
