Miami Ranked Among the Fittest Cities in America, New Study Finds

Living a healthy lifestyle depends not only on personal motivation but also on where you live. A new study by MedExpress ranks Miami as the third fittest city in the United States, highlighting its strong fitness culture, growing access to healthy lifestyle resources, and residents’ commitment to staying active.

The study analyzed the 50 largest U.S. cities using eight key indicators related to fitness infrastructure, healthy eating, and community engagement. Researchers evaluated the number of gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, health food markets, juice and smoothie bars, along with Google search interest for gyms and healthy restaurants and Yelp activity across wellness-related businesses.

Miami delivered one of the strongest performances in the nation, earning the No. 1 ranking for overall fitness engagement and interest. Residents generated 47,100 gym-related Google searches per 100,000 people, the highest search volume of any city in the country, surpassing Seattle and Atlanta.

The city also ranked fifth nationwide for access to exercise and healthy eating resources, thanks to its wide selection of fitness centers, wellness studios, and nutrition-focused businesses. In addition, Miami placed third in the nation for Pilates studio availability, reinforcing its reputation as a destination that offers diverse fitness opportunities for people of all ages and lifestyles.

Overall, Long Beach, California, claimed the top spot in the national rankings, followed by Oakland, California, with Miami completing the top three. Other cities in the Top 10 include Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Boston, Tampa, San Francisco, Denver, and Seattle. Florida performed particularly well, with Tampa ranking seventh, while Jacksonville placed 48th.

Despite its impressive standing, the report also highlights an important challenge. Although Miami leads the nation in fitness interest, available infrastructure may not be expanding quickly enough to meet growing demand. The city currently offers approximately 63 gyms per 100,000 residents, a solid figure but one that still falls short of the extraordinary level of public interest reflected in online searches.

Researchers suggest this gap presents opportunities for continued investment in gyms, boutique fitness studios, wellness centers, and healthy food businesses as Miami’s population continues to grow and prioritize active lifestyles.

The MedExpress rankings were calculated by assigning equal weight to each of the eight fitness and wellness metrics. While access to facilities and healthy food options plays a significant role, the report concludes that personal commitment remains the most important factor in achieving long-term health and wellness.

For Miami, this recognition reinforces what residents experience every day. From sunrise workouts along South Beach and running trails throughout the city to packed fitness classes and a thriving wellness community, Miami continues to establish itself as one of America’s premier destinations for healthy living. As interest in fitness continues to rise, the Magic City is well-positioned to remain a national leader in health, wellness, and active living for years to come.
