South Florida Students Race Their Self-Built Electric Vehicles at Daytona Speedway, Thanks to FPL and NASCAR
On Tuesday, June 10, high school students from across Florida will take over the track at Daytona International Speedway—not as spectators, but as competitors in the final race of the FPL Electric Go-Kart Racing Series.
Organized by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) in collaboration with NASCAR, this exciting event offers students passionate about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) the chance to test their custom-built electric go-karts on one of the world’s most iconic racetracks.
Students Racing from Across Florida
Participating schools include:
• Miami/Broward Market: South Dade Senior High, Miami Coral Park, Terra Environmental Research Institute
• Fort Myers / Naples Market: Port Charlotte High School, Dunbar High School
• Orlando / Daytona Market: Lyman High School
• Pensacola / Mobile Market: Navarre High School, West Florida High School
• Jacksonville Market: Creekside High School
A Day of Speed, STEM, and Hands-On Learning
The race kicks off at 9:30 a.m. at Daytona International Speedway (1801 W International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL). It marks the culmination of a statewide series of Electrathon races where students compete to design and drive the most energy-efficient electric vehicles.
FPL supports 25 schools across the state with EV build kits, technical guidance, and curriculum materials. The goal: give students a real-world opportunity to apply engineering skills and ignite their interest in future STEM careers.
Driving Toward a Brighter Future
More than just a race, this program is a platform to empower the next generation of innovators. “The Electrathon series allows students to take classroom learning and turn it into high-performance reality,” said an FPL spokesperson.
“They’re not just learning about electric vehicles—they’re building them and racing them.”In addition to racing, students will enjoy behind-the-scenes access to the Speedway and interact with professionals in motorsports and engineering fields.
