FPL Volunteers Strengthen Community Bonds During Power to Care Week in North Miami Beach
More than 30 employees from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) rolled up their sleeves in North Miami Beach this week, demonstrating that community impact extends far beyond delivering reliable energy. As part of the company’s 18th annual Power to Care Week, FPL volunteers partnered with the Humane Society of Greater Miami to rehabilitate a dog park at the nonprofit’s shelter, helping create a safer and more welcoming space for rescue animals awaiting adoption.
The volunteer event, held Tuesday morning at the shelter on West Dixie Highway, was one of more than 20 projects taking place across over 10 counties statewide from Feb. 16–21. Power to Care Week has grown into a large-scale service initiative that mobilizes hundreds of FPL employees across Florida, all united by a shared commitment to strengthening the communities they serve.

In North Miami Beach, volunteers dedicated the morning to hands-on improvements that will have a lasting impact. Teams worked on gardening, laying fresh sod and gravel, moving pavers, and completing landscaping enhancements designed to improve the play area for dogs. The refreshed outdoor space not only enhances the shelter’s facilities but also supports the well-being of animals as they prepare for adoption into loving homes.
The Humane Society of Greater Miami is a nonprofit animal welfare organization committed to placing every dog and cat in a caring home, providing humane education, and promoting responsible pet ownership. Community partnerships, including corporate volunteer initiatives like FPL’s, are essential to sustaining and improving the shelter’s services.
Now in its 18th year, Power to Care has evolved from a single day of service into a week-long statewide movement. The initiative reinforces FPL’s long-standing dedication to powering strong communities and making Florida an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.
Beyond physical improvements, the project highlights the human side of corporate responsibility. Employees stepped away from their daily roles to work alongside nonprofit staff and fellow volunteers, building relationships while directly supporting a cause that resonates with local residents.
For the rescue dogs enjoying their upgraded play space, the impact is immediate and tangible. For the broader community, the message is clear: meaningful change happens when businesses and nonprofits collaborate with purpose.
Through Power to Care Week, FPL continues to show that its commitment to Florida extends beyond infrastructure—reaching into neighborhoods, strengthening local organizations, and helping create safer, healthier environments for both people and pets alike.
