FPL Opens Pathways to the Future Through STEM Scholarships
A celebration filled with excitement, hope and opportunity brought students and families together at Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center, where Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) surprised 10 outstanding students with scholarships designed to support their college education and future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, commonly known as STEM.
The event recognized students participating in Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics and Enrichment, or SECME, programs. These initiatives help prepare young people to continue their education and develop skills connected to high-demand careers in Florida and across the country.
Among the scholarship recipients was Anjan Kumar Sangam, a student at Blanche Ely High School in Broward County, who emphasized the impact the support will have on his education.
“I’m grateful to FPL for this scholarship and the difference it makes for students like me,” said Sangam, a 2026 SECME Scholarship winner. “This support helps ease the financial burden of college and opens the door to opportunities that I didn’t think were possible. This scholarship is life changing.”
The NextEra Energy Scholarship for Students in SECME was awarded to 10 college-bound seniors representing schools in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
In addition to Sangam, recipients included Lynn-Sinthia Louis of Highlands Christian Academy; Devaughn Henry and Zion Clark of American Senior High School; Mike Dorsainvil of Miami Norland Senior High School; and Gabriel Diaz of Barbara Goleman Senior High School.
Also receiving scholarships were Martell Mincey of Pahokee Middle Senior High School; Hannah Wong and Aidan Burtoft of Suncoast Community High School; and Leslie Cruz of Glades Central Community High School.
“Moments like today highlight the incredible potential of these students and the importance of investing in their futures,” said Kate Cotner, director of community engagement for FPL. “By supporting STEM education and workforce development, we are helping create opportunities that strengthen both our communities and Florida’s economy.”
The announcement took place in a celebratory setting that allowed students to receive the news alongside their families. For many of them, the financial support represents not only recognition of their academic achievements, but also an opportunity to begin college with greater confidence and fewer financial concerns.
The initiative is part of FPL’s broader commitment to educational programs that expand access to higher education, inspire innovation and support students who may face financial challenges.
Through these investments, the company is helping prepare a skilled workforce capable of meeting the technological and energy-related demands of the future. The scholarship program also reinforces the importance of opening doors for talented young people to achieve their goals and contribute to the growth of their communities.
