Weekly Injection Could Transform Parkinson’s Care
A groundbreaking medical innovation may soon transform the lives of more than 8.5 million people worldwide living with Parkinson’s disease. Scientists at the University of South Australia (UniSA) have developed a weekly injectable drug that could replace the burden of taking multiple pills every day – a step that researchers are calling a true game-changer.
For decades, people with Parkinson’s have relied on levodopa and carbidopa, medications that help manage tremors, stiffness, and slow movement. While these drugs remain the gold standard, their short lifespan requires patients to take them several times a day. This frequent dosing can be overwhelming, particularly for elderly patients or those with swallowing difficulties, often leading to inconsistent treatment and reduced effectiveness.
Now, UniSA researchers have created a long-acting injectable gel that delivers a steady dose of both medications for an entire week. Injected under the skin or into muscle tissue, the biodegradable formulation gradually releases the drugs, maintaining stable levels in the body without the highs and lows associated with daily pills.
Lead researcher Professor Sanjay Garg, from UniSA’s Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation, says this innovation has the power to dramatically improve quality of life.
“Our goal was to simplify treatment, improve patient compliance, and maintain consistent therapeutic levels. This weekly injection could be a game-changer for Parkinson’s care.”
The results are impressive. In laboratory testing, more than 90% of levodopa and 81% of carbidopa were released steadily over seven days. The implant degraded naturally within a week, leaving no harmful residue, and proved safe in cell viability tests. Even better, the injection can be administered with a fine needle, ensuring minimal discomfort and avoiding the need for surgical implants.
For patients, this could mean freedom from the stress of frequent dosing, fewer side effects, and a more reliable treatment that keeps symptoms under control. As UniSA PhD researcher Deepa Nakmode explains: “After years of focused research, it’s incredibly rewarding to see our innovation reach this stage. We are confident this will change lives.”
The promise of this technology doesn’t end with Parkinson’s. Researchers believe it could also be adapted for other chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, pain management, and neurodegenerative disorders, where steady drug delivery is crucial.
Although clinical trials are still ahead, the outlook is highly encouraging. A weekly injection may soon replace daily pill routines, giving patients more time, more stability, and more hope for the future.
