Mathematics and Spanish Rank as the Most Challenging Subjects for Students in Florida
New research reveals that Mathematics and Spanish are the subjects students in Florida struggle with the most, reflecting both statewide and national academic trends. The findings come from a study conducted by education recruitment agency Find a Super Tutor, which analyzed online search behavior related to academic support across the United States.
Using data from the Google Keyword Planner collected between July 2024 and June 2025, researchers examined more than 1,500 keyword combinations tied to 118 school subjects, including searches such as “help with math” and “Spanish tutoring.” Subjects were then ranked based on their average monthly search volume, indicating where students are most frequently seeking help.
In Florida, Mathematics topped the list, generating an average of 7,683 searches per month, making it the most difficult subject for students in the state. Spanish ranked second, with an average of 3,553 monthly searches, highlighting the challenges faced by students learning the language as a second language or as part of their academic curriculum.
Programming followed in third place, averaging 1,776 searches per month, while Information Technology ranked fourth with 980 searches. English Language completed Florida’s top five, with an average of 774 searches each month.
Nationally, the results show a similar pattern. Mathematics ranks as the most challenging subject across the country, with more than 125,000 average monthly searches, followed by Spanish and Programming. According to education experts, these subjects share common difficulties, including abstract concepts, logical reasoning, and cumulative learning requirements.
Joshua James, director of Find a Super Tutor, explained that subjects within STEM fields and language studies consistently present the greatest challenges. “Mathematics, for example, requires a strong foundational understanding. Without it, students can quickly fall behind,” James said. “Language subjects like Spanish involve mastering grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context, which can be particularly demanding for learners.”
The study also highlights the growing role of online tutoring platforms, interactive tools, and educational apps in helping students overcome academic obstacles. These resources provide flexible, personalized learning experiences that are especially valuable during school breaks, when many students continue studying at home.
The findings underscore the importance of recognizing where students need the most support and ensuring access to effective learning tools. For families and educators in Florida, understanding these academic challenges is a critical step toward improving student outcomes and addressing learning gaps in the subjects that matter most.
