Rocio Velasquez: Celebrate Our Success!
My name is Rocio Velasquez, I was born in Homestead Fl. where I currently live. I am a first-generation Latina student graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Communication Sciences and Disorders with a Certificate in Education and Educational Services.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought change and uncertainty to the graduating class of 2020. Being the first in my family to graduate from college, I have worked hard to ensure my parents’ sacrifices would not be in vain. Coming from a farmworker family, I never thought college would be a possibility.
However, I have been able to earn my bachelor’s degree with a full-ride scholarship at one of the top universities in the nation. Due to the current crisis, I am not able to celebrate my accomplishments with all my friends and family with a proper graduation the way I had always dreamed.
Nonetheless, I am grateful for my health and my family who have been with me every step of the way. My message to the graduating class of 2020 is that this current crisis speaks to our resilience and determination. Nothing can take away our effort and the experiences we hold deep in our hearts.
Let’s keep our heads up and finish strong!
